As we celebrate School Board Appreciation Week (February 17-21) in South Dakota, the Harrisburg School District takes this opportunity to recognize the dedicated individuals who serve on our school board. These dedicated leaders work tirelessly to provide students with a high-quality education and ensure teachers have the resources necessary for success.
A Commitment to Students, Staff, and the Community
The Harrisburg School Board—comprised of Linda Kirchhevel, Jay Hutton, and members Lisa Groon, Mike Knudson, and Terra Vennard—has continuously led the district through unprecedented growth and changing student demographics. Their leadership ensures that every student in the district has access to viable, innovative, and inclusive curriculum opportunities.
The board’s mission is clear:
✅ Meet students where they are in their academic journey.
✅ Be fiscally responsible, ensuring taxpayer dollars are used efficiently to support student success.
✅ Retain top-quality educators by fostering a positive and supportive work culture.
✅ Proactively manage the district’s growth to ensure resources, facilities, and opportunities keep pace with student needs.
Former ASBSD Executive Director Dr. Douglas R. Wermedal praised the board, stating,
“Harrisburg School Board members exemplify what a great board does by always putting the best interests of their students first. Their leadership and commitment to helping students thrive, while also supporting a great culture for staff and maintaining strong relationships in their community, makes them a more than worthy recipient of recognition.”
